Cotton Picking

Cotton Picking

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,
as working for the lord ”
Colossians 3:23

Mary found a black and white 2" x 3" photograph of her mother-in-law picking cotton with her brothers and fell in love with it. Hard work was a way of life; children would help in the work, as they were a family. Mary saw the colors of the cotton fields, the hats on their heads, the sacks to put the cotton in and the expressions on their faces. It was hard work yet you did what you had to do. She wanted to remind people that there is beauty in work, the sun shining on the cotton, and the colors in the shadows of those working. To think they never knew that one day this picture that was taken would be made into a painting to encourage others; To stir memories of the past. Mary chose vibrant colors because she saw so much life expressed in it.

Prodigal Son

Prodigal Son

“In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing
in the presence of the angels of God
over one sinner who repents”
Luke 15:10

This painting is about repentance, forgiveness and a new heart. Mary chose to put the man on his knees to exemplify humbleness and broken spirit. She placed the cross and the bible in the painting as symbols to remind us that it's not just words but we must surrender our all.

"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your strength." Deuteronomy 6:5

It's at the cross where Jesus, God's only son paid the price for our sins with His blood. It's through reading the bible that we come to know who God is and what His will for us is. Luke15:11-32 The prodigal son represents us, who were in rebellion, blind, seeing no need for God, doomed for eternal destruction (hell), come back in humbleness seeking forgiveness. Mary placed the hands of the Lord on the shoulders of the man because God not only forgives us but gives us a new heart.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. " 2 Corinthians 5:17

He adopts us into His family and calls us His brothers we can talk to God call Him Father. Matthew 6:9-13. Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debtors, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen

A Walk in the Stream

A Walk in the Stream

“Trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge him, and He shall direct your paths”
Proverbs 3:5,6

Mary toned the canvas with red and designed the trees in a way that would draw people into the painting. In this painting Mary wanted to convey a message;  As the women are walking down the stream only see what is in front of them, so we can only see what is happening now. As the women take one step at a time so we need to do in our lives, putting our trust in the Lord.

His Promise

His Promise

“I am the resurrection, and the life;
he that believes in me, though he were dead,
yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth believeth in me shall never die.”
John 11:25,26

This painting is about God's promise of eternal life. Mary used a picture she had of her grandmother who had many strokes and was confined to a bed for this painting. She closed her eyes to express the peace a Christian feels in dying when one has lived a life in Christ. She placed a bible beside her on the bed to signify a love for God and His word.

"For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Roman 6:23, that is why Mary made her young again when she painted her risen as it is because of sin that our bodies are falling apart (dying), but our spiritual bodies never die and we, who have received Him as our Lord and Savior look forward to the day when we will receive our resurrected bodies which God has promised to all who have believed on Him, Jesus Christ the Son of God.

This illustration was painted from the perspective of above and behind Jesus so that the expression of joy on the face of the woman risen looking up at Jesus could be seen. Mary put a glow on her face because of what happen to Moses in Exodus 33:21 Š34 he had a glow about his face from just the reflection of God how much greater will be ours when we see Him.

"She also placed Jesus' hand on the woman who was mourning over the death of her mother because "He heals the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds."
Psalms 147:3 up their wounds." Psalms 147:3

Friends

Friends

“Some friends may ruin you.
But a real friend will be more loyal than a brother.”
Proverbs 18:24

This painting is about the importance of friends. “Friends” was created from a very bad photo. Mary could hardly see the figures of the boys and had to get help from volunteers who would model for her. She wouldn’t have used this photo except for the story she saw in it. Mary saw three boys meeting together on a hillside talking with each other. A good friend is more precious than gold. Gold is here today and gone tomorrow. Friends will stand by us in good and bad times. They encourage us in our dreams and help us stand strong for the values and truths we believe in. Today people seem too busy to take the time that’s needed to make close friends and to be a friend to others to put others before our own desires. That is partly why Mary was drawn to do this painting of three boys together in a time when television didn’t exist and the brand names on clothes weren’t important.

“Do not be misled: bad company corrupts good character.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 “A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24

A Time for Everything

A Time for Everything

“There is a time for everything and a season
for every activity under heaven.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1

Mary paints with a fresh new style where she is the one who decides what to paint and how she wants to convey this in her paintings. Here she chose to use spring colors to express the season. She designed the grass to direct attention to the boy fishing

Prayer of a Little Child

Prayer Meeting

"For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."  Matthew 18:20

Acrylic on Board

In this painting Jesus is painted in the middle of a prayer gathering to remind us of what He said in Matthew 18:20. Mary wanted express the importance of Christians gathering together to pray and worship God. Many people suffer persecution for their faith in Christ and don’t have the freedom we do in America to meet together for prayer and reading the Word of God.

Mary has the people meeting downstairs in a basement to remind us of this. We might not always have the freedom to worship out in the open, there is no guarantee. What God allowed to happen to the Israelites because of their unfaithfulness could happen to us.

"Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints."  Ephesians 6:18

The people praying are in different clothing, of different nationalities, young, old, women and men. Some are kneeling some are standing to show that it’s not the color, how you’re dressed or position you’re in that impresses God but your heart.

"And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much more as you see the Day approaching."  Hebrews 10:24,25

You will notice that there are no shoes on those praying this is a reminder that where the Lord is, is holy ground. In Exodus 3:5 God tells Moses to take off his sandals, for you are standing is holy ground.

The True Key To Freedom

Bible Reading

“Let the words of Christ, in all their richness, live in your hearts and make you wise. Use His words to teach and counsel each other. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.”
Colossians 3:16

Pastel
17" x 20"

In this pastel Mary wanted to show the love for God and His word. She placed the children around their mother to show their interest in God, His promises and His will for them as she reads from the bible. Her choice of colors and strokes express the beauty she sees in the faces of the children. Each with his or hers own unique features.

Bean Harvest

Spreading The Word

Oil on Canvas
20" x 16"

“For Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.  But how can they call on Him to save them unless they believe in Him?  And how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him?  And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells them.”   Romans 10:13,14

This painting was composed from pictures a Christian brother brought back from a missionary trip he went on.  She wanted to draw attention to the one reading to the children from the Bible and also to the children surrounding him.  All people, everyone, everywhere is loved by God and it is His desire that all come to know Him and has chosen to use us who believe, to spread the good news.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.”   Matthew 5:14,15     Mary’s desire was to illustrate the hunger for the truth in the children’s faces.  It is so easy to ignore the needs both spiritual and physical of those outside our homes.  Jesus commanded us to love one another, the question is how much do we love others.
